Boosting Operator Productivity with AI: Tana’s Experience with spogen.ai’s Smart Assistant Pilot

In early 2025, Finnish environmental technology company Tana partnered with spogen.ai to pilot the Smart Assistant, an AI-powered application to make machine operation easier, faster, and more intuitive. Direct from any phone or tablet.

The pilot focused on the Tana H260 Landfill Compactor, the most productive landfill compactor on the market, used in demanding waste management environments. The goal of the pilot was to test how AI could enhance the operator experience in a setting that was already designed for maximized uptime and simplified maintenance without requiring Tana’s team to rethink or rebuild their existing manuals or support systems.

Simplifying Tasks in the Field

At the core of the Smart Assistant is an AI-powered system tailored for machine operators and maintenance. With features like hands-free voice interaction, visual guidance, and context-aware assistance, the solution helps users quickly access instructions, checklists, and solve issues on the go without flipping through documents. Documents that will probably not be in the cabin when the need arises in the field.

For the pilot, spogen.ai imported Tana’s existing user and maintenance manuals, enabling the Smart Assistant to identify relevant information within documentation that comprises multiple models and to answer natural-language questions like:

  • What is included in the daily maintenance schedule?
  • How do I adjust the scraper bars?
  • Show me the cabin door sensor on schematics.

The system also provided visual diagrams and step-by-step checklists directly from the source materials, making tasks clearer and faster to complete.

A Leaner Path to Smarter Support

The first phase of the pilot ran from January to June 2025, giving both teams the opportunity to evaluate how the Smart Assistant could perform in real operations in a niche-like technical and machinery environment.

The Smart Assistant proved its worth in the setting of highly specialized global machinery manufacturers like Tana, as the ready-made but fully customizable software requires no diversion of internal R&D resources, reorganization or rewriting support documentation. The results also confirmed that the solution works efficiently also in separating and contextualizing documentation covering multiple models.

Juha Lemmetti, COO, in charge of the partnership on spogen.ai’s side, is excited about the cooperation thus far. “Working with Tana, a leader of its field, has helped us prove how also a focused, global company can benefit from our ready-made AI solution. We’re proud to help better surface the deep knowledge that makes Tana machines what they are, and thanks to that support the daily jobs of the operators.”

For spogen.ai, the pilot also validated how smoothly the system can handle documentation imports and context mapping, which is a critical piece of making the technology effective without complex setup.

Looking Ahead

The pilot marks a step forward for both companies. For Tana, it’s a promising way to explore AI-powered support without losing focus on what they do best: building reliable, high-performance machines for the solid waste management industry. For spogen.ai, it’s further confirmation that Smart Assistant can adapt to varying types of machinery and handle documentation covering multiple models without adding friction to existing workflows.

“The visual instructions and voice interaction are a real advantage when operators need quick answers. This gave us a practical view into how AI can support operators in the field – not in the future, but today,” said Petteri Tiainen, Product Manager, Digital Solutions at Tana.
